Organ Shoes

So, I just got called to be one of the ward organists. I don't really play the organ, but I did take a beginning organ class at college five years ago where I learned proper techniques for both hands and feet. Luckily I saved all of my books of hymns from that class. I'm excited to expand my talents and really learn a new skill!

I decided today that I would be more serious about learning to play better if I bit the bullet and bought some organ shoes. My organ class five years ago recommended buying shoes from this website, but they are like 50 bucks! Thank goodness for the internet, because I found this other website, where you can buy dance shoes that look and feel just like organ shoes for 20 bucks! (I think the heel is just 1/4 inch higher than what is recommended, but I think it will definitely work!) I thought I would just spread the good deal around, since I have many piano-playing friends who may also get this opportunity some day. . .

I'm the ward organist, too! But you're way better than me. I only play the feet on the hymns I practiced when I took my organ class at the Y. I'm too lazy to practice that much. I'm sure playing the pedals would become easier and more natural if I did it more, but for now I'm the lazy organist who doesn't play the bass on the pedals. Good luck!

Being the Ward Organist is my favorite calling! And the organ shoes help a TON! I do have the $50 ones that I bought while taking lessons at BYU-I. Those cheaper ones look like they just might do the trick, though! Congratulations!! Have fun!!

Thanks for spreading the word! Like you, I really don't know how to play the organ but it has also been my calling a few times (??!) but it's fun to learn something new, right? :) I'm sure you're great at it! Good luck!

That's great!!! Several years back I was called to be the ward organist- I had never played the organ (well, 1 lesson from my mom). I think the bishop thought playing the piano for 30 years was close enough. ha ha!! I started taking lessons from my mom, and practiced 10 hours a week. I had more anxiety with that calling than any leadership position I've ever had. I felt so sick every Sunday morning. (and you should hear about the nightmare I had the night before my "debut") BUT here's the good news- the Lord qualifies those he calls rather than calling the qualified sometimes! I knew I was having help remmebering the technic for the hands, registration, and pedals- certainly I couldn't have done it without Him!!! So- you have talent, some education, AND the Lord on your side!!! You'll be fabulous.

That's awesome Jenny! I've never even heard of such a thing!!! So crazy. I'm glad you found a good deal on organ shoes. Thankfully I will never have to fill those shoes!!!

It's great you get to learn a fun new talent.
