When I started potty training Jared about 5 months ago, I was advised by several friends to ditch the diapers entirely during naptime (which I have done) and also during nighttime (which I have not). Jared rarely takes naps anymore, but when he does, I have found that if I let him wake up on his own then he will wet the bed. However, if I wake him up first, then we can make it to the potty in time.
I recently talked with two different friends that have 3-year-old boys who are potty trained at night. One friend says her boy just gets up by himself to go if he needs to; the other friend wakes up her boy once around 11:00 pm to go so that he can make it through the rest of the night.
So, a few days ago I decided to try underwear at night with Jared. I limit his drinks after dinner, make him go right before bed, and then wake him up around 11:00 to go again. We put a night light in his bathroom and talked about how he needs to get up first thing in the morning when he wakes up. We have now had four unsuccessful nights. He sleeps right through it, and wet pj's don't seem to bother him. I'm sick of doing laundry. I'm wondering whether I should stick with it for a while longer or if I should just go back to diapers. I've been reading online that boys often take longer to potty train at night, but I really don't want to have one of those boys that wears Pull-Ups at night until he's 7 or 8. Any advice?

i know it frusterating! Bryson my oldest is 7 1/2 and I think it took him till he was 4 1/2 but my daughter 17 months younger had it down at 2 1/2!
Is what i did with Bryson is I printed a calander and he would put stickers on it if he woke up dry. After a week he got a little prize, 2 weeks dry, and then at 1 month he went to build a bear and He has been dry ever since! It took a couple month but I never did diapers, I did the pull up. just trying to keep the consistancy of underware.
Good luck maybe the calander sticker thing will work. I think some night I would wake him up around 1 or 2 when i started.
James is the same...potty trained during the day and during nap time! But at night we are still doing diapers. We recently went to his 3 yr old check up and our doctor was really impressed that James was already potty trained and as for the night time...she said not to press it because it will come on its own. I really haven't worried about it since. I just know that we will go through a diaper a day. Some days he does wake up completely dry and runs to the toilet! We reward him immensely. When the time is right, I am sure he will let us know! That is how the potty training thing worked for us...one day James just told me he was ready for big boys! So all in all...I think you guys are doing great - potty trained at 3!!
Christina wore pull ups at night until we moved here (she was 5) and Rebecca was dry at night for several nights in a row, so we said she could move to underwear. Christina, deciding she was not to be outdone by her younger sister, then was dry for several nights in a row and moved to underwear. They both had occasional accidents during the day and night, but for the most part did great. Do whatever your tolerance level says to take. When we potty trained Collette, we decided to let her not sleep with a pull up and she went dry much quicker, but had occasional accidents for a long time. I still stand by the philosophy that potty training is the most stressful time in young parenting for me.
I have no advice as my nearly 3-year-old daughter isn't even day time trained yet. Though I am bound and determined to take care of that this week. I don't know what I'll do about night training. She's never EVER woken up dry before... Good luck! Let me in on your secrets when you figure it out!
Hugh has been potty trained for 9 months and still gets a diaper for night. We've tried and he just sleeps like a brick through it. I'm going to try again when he's 3 1/2 and then again at 4, 4 1/2, etc I don't think they're being lazy or defiant, they just can't wake up yet. It is a bummer to still be spending money on diapers though :(
Maybe I was just lucky- but both my boys were really easy to potty train. I read the book "Toilet Training in Less than a Day" and followed most of it. I don't remember what it said to do at night- but here's what I did. I left the boys in diapers (I never even bought a Pull-up- I think they are too confusing)during naptime and nighttime, but strictly had them wear underwear in the day. You've got the daytime down- anyway, I left them in the diaper for sleep until I noticed a pattern of dry diapers develop on their own. Once they had a dry diaper for a week during naptime, I ditched the diaper. I did the same thing for nighttime. Once there was a dry diaper at night for a week straight, I ditched it. I don't remember it taking very long. Mason was 2 1/2 and Spencer was barely 3.
Good luck!!! (Now I'm ready to start training my daughter, at 27 months.... hopefully it will be as easy as the boys were!)
